Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapeutic approach that focuses on understanding and improving behavior.
There were some misunderstandings about ABA in the past, but it's important to know, like an any other field, ABA has changed a lot for the better. ABA is a reflective practice and we recognise the fields’ wrongdoings, the biggest concern being that ABA interventions sometimes relied heavily on aversive techniques.
Modern ABA places a strong emphasis on positive reinforcement. and in turn have moulded ourselves from being overly rigid and focused on conformity to focusing on teaching functional skills, promoting independence, and enhancing overall quality of life, establishing autonomy and self-determination. .
ABA practices also prioritize collaboration with the individual receiving services, as well as their family members or caregivers. Informed consent and active participation in goal-setting and treatment planning are central principles of modern ABA.
When implemented with sensitivity, flexibility, and a focus on the individual's well-being, ABA can be a valuable tool for supporting individuals with a wide range of developmental and behavioral challenges.
